Station 33 has recently gained 13 Basic Vehicle Rescue Technicians certified through the PA Dept. of Health. During the months of October, November and December, a total of thirteen members from station 33 completed the Pa. Dept of Health requirements to be certified as Basic Vehicle Rescue Technicians. One class was hosted at Station 33 in which 8 members attended and the other 5 members attended a class hosted by Centre County Sta. 4 (Centre Hall, PA). Three weekends had to be given up for the required hours to be completed. A special thanks has to go out to the families and loved ones of not just these members, but to all the members who have sacrificed their time so that the firefighters of Station 33 can be dedicated to being trained to the best of their ability. Congratulations to Joe Gault, Chip Dillon, Todd Keith, Billy Mayes, Tom Woodring, Vikki Hoover, Casey Hoover, Bruce Baker, Kenny Riley, Brian Stewart, David Hoffman, J.R. Watson, and John Wagner!!

Stations 33, 34, 36 and Medic Unit 402 were dispatched to the Grazierville area of Snyder Twp. for a 2 vehicle MVA with possible injuries. The accident took place at the intersection of Rossman Road and Old Rt. 220 adjacent to the Tri-Star auto dealership. Rescue 33 with Chief 33 (B.Lynn) responded with a crew of 5 along with Engine 3413 from station 34 with Chief 34 (T.Weston) on board. Rescue 33 arrived on scene with Chief 33 taking command. Crews found 2 vehicles, one being a SUV and the other being a small pickup truck with heavy front end damage to both vehicles. Amazingly, all occupants were out of both vehicles and refusing medical treatment from EMS. The rescue and engine crews controlled all hazards and fluids until PSP arrived on scene and both vehicles were removed from the roadway. Chief 33 held all units that were on scene and returned Engine 3612. Units cleared the scene in about 20 minutes. Tyrone Fire Police also responded for traffic control.

10:28 Hrs. -- Stations 33, 34, 36 and Medic Unit 401 were alerted for a structure fire near the Blair/Centre County line in Snyder Twp. Engine 3317 with Chief 33 and a crew of 6 responded to the call within minutes of the initial dispatch. Deputy Chief 3602 responded direct and arrived on scene prior to Engine 33 reporting that he had a 2 story family dwelling with smoke showing from the exterior. Deputy Chief 36 assumed command. Engine 33 arrived on scene being the first in apparatus. Chief 33 took the operations sector having 33's crew split in 2 with 2 crew members advancing a 1 3/4" handline to the basement where the seat of the fire was located and the other crew members took the can intiating a search and checked for extension. Engine 3612 arrived shortly thereafter responding with a light crew. Rescue 3338 arrived on scene with a crew of 4 behind Engine 3612. While Engine 33's crew performed the quick knock of the fire which was located in the basement, Rescue 33's crew were given the ventilation assignment. Centre county Station 15 (Port Matilda) responded with Engine 1510. The thermal imaging camera off of Engine 1510 was used to check for extension upon their arrival. After the overhaul was completed, Deputy Chief 36 released all units and placed the box available. Tankers from Huntingdon Co. 22 and Blair 21 also were enroute, but were cancelled upon knockdown of the fire.

19:46 Hrs. -- Stations 33, 34, and 36 were dispatched for a physical rescue with 2 males reported to be in the river in the area Northwood between the American Eagle Papers facility reservoir and the Vail Crossing area. Rescue 3338 responded with a crew of 7 with Deputy Chief 33 (J.Wagner) responding direct. Assistant Chief 33 (J.Watson) also responded direct. Upon 33 units arriving on scene contact was made with a Trooper from PSP who stated that he had been in a foot pursuit with 2 male individuals who had ran away from the Greentree group home in Bald Eagle. The Trooper was enroute to the group home when he encountered the 2 individuals walking along the road. The 2 youths once seeing the Trooper, started into a wooded area and crossing the Bald Eagle Creek. The Trooper not knowing if the 2 youths had made it across the river, requested the fire dept to assist with a possible rescue. Units arrived on scene and set up a command post at the point where the youths entered the woods. Engine 3414 and Utility 3441 arrived on scene along with Rescue 3338. Deputy Chief 33 established command. Engine 3612 also arrived on scene. Crews entered the wooded area with 2 thermal imaging cameras searching the river along the banks in both directions. Engine 3317 also responded with a crew of 6. Engine 33 took up position at the Vail Crossing area and searched with a 3rd thermal imaging camera. About 15 minutes into the search. Blair 911 received a report from Tyrone PD that they possibly had the 2 juveniles in custody in the area of 22nd St. and Lincoln Ave in the boro of Tyrone, approximately 3/4 of a mile from where the youths entered the woods. TPD reported that both males were wet and cold. PSP arrived on scene and confirmed that both individuals in custody were the youths in question. Upon getting confirmation from PSP, all units were placed available by command.

Congratulations to Casey Hoover and a belated congratulations to Brian Stewart for receiving the PA Dept. of Health EMT-B certification. Each went through the accelerated class which was held at Conemough Memorial Hospital in Johnstown, PA this past summer (06). Kudos to both for putting in that extra effort to get EMT-B certified!! With the additions of these 2 certifications, a total of 22 members are EMT-B certified at Station 33.

19:35 Hrs. -- Stations 33, 34, and Medic Unit 401 were alerted for a single vehicle MVA rollover with confinement at the intersection of Lincoln Ave and 18th St. in the boro. Capt. 3404 (S.Weakland) arrived on scene finding a full size pickup truck on its side against a utility pole with an elderly male driver uninjured, but confined in the truck. Deputy Chief 3302 (J.Wagner) responded direct and arrived on scene just after Engine 3413 whose quarters was only a half block from the accident. Chief 3401 (T.Weston) arrived on scene and assumed command. Deputy Chief 33 assumed extrication operations. Rescue 3338 arrived on scene with a crew of 7. Rescue 33's crew along with the crew of Engine 34 began stabilizing the vehicle which was against a utility pole with a guide wire caught on the driverside tire of the truck. Crews stabilized the truck with step chocks and Junkyard Dog struts. Once the vehicle was stabilized, crews began to remove the rear window of the truck. Once the window was removed the patient was assisted from the vehicle and turned over to EMS. Crews had the driver out of the vehicle in approximately 5 mins after getting the vehicle stabilized. The patient who was initially refusing EMS, decided to be transported to Tyrone Hospital ER by Medic Unit 401 for evaluation. Crews remained on scene controling hazards until the vehicle was removed. Command returned all units and placed the box available.

12:30 Hrs. -- Stations 33, 34, 36 and Medic Unit 401 were dispatched for a 3 vehicle MVA involving two tractor trailers and a passenger car along I-99 (on the Bald Eagle northbound exit). Initial dispatch stated that there was entrapment and fire. Centre Co. Asst. Chief 1502 (B. Benner) was passing the accident and confirmed entrapment and fire. Deputy Chief 3602 (P.Morrison) responded and arrived on scene assuming command reporting a fully involved vehicle fire with heavy entrapment. Rescue 3338 responded with a crew of 5. Engine 3612 also responded and arrived on scene just prior to Rescue 33. Crews from each unit pulled 1 3/4" handlines to start suppression of the fire. Due to the heavy fire involving the vehicles and a tank truck with an initial unknown product, additional tankers from Blair stations 22, 21, 36, Centre 15, and Huntingdon 22 were requested. Engine 3413, 3317, and Rescue/Engine 2231 also responded. Foam operations were put into place by Rescue 33 and Engine 36. Upon knocking down the fire, EMS crews determined that there was one confirmed DOS and requested the Blair county coroner to respond to the scene. The tank truck was found to be empty of its product (amacite). The other tractor trailer was found to be empty as well. Blair County EMA (G.Dennis) responded on the call. Upon controling the fire and extinguishment, Tankers 22, 21, Centre 15 and Huntingdon 22 were released and placed back in service. EMA requested Blair Co. Mobile Communications Unit "Com 1" to respond to the scene. PSP also responded with their accident reconstruction team. Upon getting permission from PSP and the coroner, crews from Rescue 33 and Engine 36 performed recovery operations finding one female occupant in the passenger vehicle. No other injuries were reported. Crews remained on scene until 18:30 hrs. Huntingdon County Station 1 transferred Rescue/Engine 1 to Station 33 while crews worked the MVA.

01:49 Hrs. -- Stations 33, 34, and Medic Unit 401 were alerted to a single vehicle MVA with reported rollover, entrapment and fire. Tyrone PD arrived on scene to find a vehicle on its roof with 2 occupants still confined in the vehicle. PD advised Blair County 911 that the vehicle was not on fire. Rescue 3338 with Lt. 3308 (B.Mayes) on board responded with a crew of 6. Asst. Chief 3303 (J.Watson) responded direct and arrived onscene establishing command. Rescue 33 arrived onscene with its crew going to work with stabilzation of the vehicle. Upon getting the vehicle stabilized, the crew went to work assisting EMS with extrication of the 2 occupants. Engine 3413 with Chief 3401 arrived onscene and took the hazard control assignment. The engine crew pulled a 1 3/4" protection line as the rescue crew was extricating the patients. Utility 3441 also responded and assisted the engine crew. Chief 34 assumed command. Once the patients were extricated, they were packaged and handed off to the ALS crews of Medic Units 401 and 433 (Altoona City Unit). Medic Unit 451 also responded on the call and stood by on scene. Upon controlling hazards and removal of the vehicle, Command (T.Weston) placed all equipment available and advised Blair 911 to place the box in service.

09:00 Hrs. -- Rescue 3338 was dispatched, per request of Medic Unit 401, along with Huntingdon County Station 22 for a recovery of a naked male body in the Little Juniata River along Rt. 453 just south of Tyrone. Also dispatched was the water rescue team from Geeseytown Fire Co (Sta.30). Rescue 33 with Chief 3301 on board, responded with a crew of 4. Upon arriving on scene, crews from Hunt 22 were along the river, with the victim being spotted from the bank in an unknown depth of water being obviously deceased. Medic Unit 401 requested Blair County Coroner to the scene. The crews staged until the Water Rescue Team arrived on scene. Once the team arrived and was prepared to enter the water, they placed their boat and made their way to the body. Rescue 33's crew supported the water team from the bank. The water team used recovery hooks to bring the victim to the surface. It was determined that the victim was immersed in approximately 5 feet of water. Upon getting the victim to the bank of the river, the body was turned over to PSP and the Blair County Coroners Office. It was later determined that the victim had assaulted a worker in the psychiatric ward of Altoona Hospital and escaped from their facility in the early hours of the morning. A search for the escaped victim was initiated by the Altoona Police Dept. and the Logan Twp. Police Dept. Both departments put out a county wide bulletin on the escapee. The victim then fled to the Norfolk Southern rail yard in the Juniata section of Altoona where he stripped out of his clothes and hopped a train going in the direction of Tyrone. Somewhere in the area of where the victim was pulled from the river, which was along the Norfolk Southern mainline, the victim jumped off the train and entered the river. A passerby spotted the victim in the frigid water and alerted the Huntingdon County 911. By the time emergency crews had arrived on the scene the victim had already disapeared under the water. The victim was a 34 y/o male from Altoona,PA. Upon recovering the body from the river and getting the body to the awaiting ambulance, crews were placed available by Huntingdon County Chief 22 (with command). Rescue 33 returned to quarters shortly after 11:00 hrs.

19:33 Hrs. -- Stations 33, 34, and Medic Unit 401 were dispatched for a one vehicle MVA with injuries at the corner of 17th St. and Lincoln Ave. within the boro. The MVA happened nearly right outside the front door of Station 34 with a vehicle striking a utility pole. Medic Unit 401 arrived on scene first and advised Blair 911 of 2 occupants with injuries with one patient being unconscious. Rescue 3338 responded with a crew of 8 with Lt. 3309 (C.Dillon) riding the officers positon. Engine 3413 and Utility 3441 responded right outside their apparatus bay to arrive on scene. Rescue 33 arrived on scene and assisted Medic Unit 401 with patient treatment and extrication. Medic Unit 401 requested another Medic Unit bringing Medic Unit 451 (Bellwood EMS) to the scene. Deputy Chief 3402 (A.Walls) arrived on scene and assumed command. Engine 34 and Utility 34 assumed hazard control duties. During extrication of the patients, Stations 33, and 34 were dispatched for a second call in box area 31-1 for a chimney fire. The chimney fire was reported to be at 309 Washington Ave. within the boro. Command of the MVA was turned over to Lt. 3309 from Deputy Chief 34. Engine 3413 and Utility 3441 cleared the MVA and responded to the chimney fire. Truck 3351 with Chief 3301 also responded on the call with a crew of 7. Crews arrived on scene of the fire quickly extinguishing the small fire. Chief 33 had command. The MVA incident was placed available upon both patients being transported to Altoona Regional Trauma Center. Two members of the Rescue 33's crew drove each medic unit to the trauma center per request of the EMS crews. Both incidents were placed in service at 20:30 hrs. A short time later Rescue 33 and Engine 34 were requested back to the scene of the MVA per request of Tyrone police dept. for lighting due to investigation of the accident.

10:59 Hrs. -- Rescue 3338 was dispatched for an assist to Centre County Station 15 (Port Matilda) for a structure fire on South Mountain Road off of Rt. 322 in Worth Twp. Rescue 33 responded on the call with a crew of 5 with Lt. 3308 (B.Mayes) riding the officers position. While enroute, Rescue 33 was given the R.I.T. assignment. With crews on scene of the structure fire getting a quick knock on the fire, Rescue 33's assignment changed to a cover assignment at Station 15 just prior to arriving in Port Matilda. Rescue 33 arrived at Station 15's quarters along with Blair Tanker 3621 (Bald Eagle) covering the tanker assignment. Crews stood by in Station 15 until approximately 14:00 hrs when Rescue 33 returned to the boro. Rescue 33 covered one incident for Station 15 which was an MVA with unknown injuries in the area of Steel Hollow Road. Rescue 33 responded with Engine 1510 which had just arrived back in station just prior to the MVA. Rescue 33 and Engine 1510 arrived on scene to find 1 vehicle in a ditch with no occupants around the vehicle. The scene was turned over to PSP with Captain 1592 placing the box available returning all equipment.

16:39 Hrs. - Stations 33 and 34 were dispatched for an odor of natural gas at the BiLo Foods grocery store on 13th St. within the boro. Engine 3413 arrived on scene just prior to Truck 3351 which responded with a crew of 5 with Lt. 3307 (T.Woodring) riding the officers position. Crews arrived on scene and evacuated the building until the source of the odor was found with Lt. 3307 assuming command. Upon evacuating the building, crews entered with multi-gas meters to try to locate the source. Crews did not encounter any odors inside the structure with negative findings with the multi-gas meters. The search for the odor was expanded to the outside area of the building also with negative findings. Command advised Blair 911 to send Dominion Gas company to check out the area. Command advised the manager of the store that they could re-enter the building and reopen for business. Command placed the box in service returning all equipment at 17:05 hrs.

04:15 Hrs. -- Stations 33, 34, 36, and Medic Unit 401 were alerted by Blair County 911 of a structure fire in the area of Montgomery St. and Boyd St. (Nealmont Area of Snyder Twp.). Truck 3351 responded with 5 volunteers and Chief 3301 (B.Lynn) on board. Engine 3413 also responded with Chief 3401 (T.Weston) on board. Engine 3413 arrived on scene just prior to Truck 33. Chief 34 reported heavy smoke showing from the first and second floor of a 3 story family dwelling with all occupants out of the structure. Engine 3413 took up position on the "B" side of the structure leaving the address clear for the truck. Truck 33 arrived on scene with Chief 33 assuming command. The engine crew from Engine 34 advanced a 1 3/4" line to the seat of the fire on the first floor with the ignition point being a pellet heating stove. The crew from Truck 33 was assigned to ventilation and a search of the second and third floors for extension. Engine 3317 arrived on scene with 4 volunteers and Deputy Chief 3302 (J. Wagner) on board. The crew of Engine 33 was given orders to proceed to the second floor to assist the truck crew with ventilation. The hose crew from Engine 34 advanced a second 1 3/4" line to the second floor. That hose crew encountered extension in the partitions above the seat of the fire. The extension was quickly extinguished and the crew from Engine and Truck 33 opened up the walls and ceiling above the fire. Tanker 3621 arrived on scene and set up to supply Engine 34 with its water. Command requested a tanker from Huntingdon Co. Station 22 (Warriors Mark) for additional water. Hunt. Tanker 22 arrived on scene and staged with its water not being needed. Rescue 3338 arrived on scene with 2 volunteers and was assigned cascade duties. Upon extinguishment of the fire, ventilation was performed by both mechanical and hydraulic means. Chief 34 was assigned division 1 operations along with Deputy Chief 33 being assigned division 2 operations. Upon completion of salvage and overhaul operations, command placed the 31 box available returning all units at 06:30 Hrs. A great job was done by all the crews on scene!

01:21 Hrs.- Stations 33, 34 and Medic Unit 401 were alerted by the Blair Co. 911 of an MVA with injuries in the northbound lane of I-99 (near Tyrone exit). Medic Unit 401 arrived on scene to find a single vehicle with 1 male passenger injured and still in the vehicle. Rescue 3338 responded with Deputy Chief 3302 (J. Wagner) and a crew of 5. Engine 3413 with Chief 3401 (T.Weston) also responded. Rescue 33 arrived on scene to find the vehicle up against the barrier and passenger still inside complaining of ankle pain. The crew of Rescue 33 assisted EMS with packaging the patient and extrication from the vehicle. Engine 3413 arrived on scene taking hazard control with Chief 3401 assuming command. The patient was then transported to Altoona Regional Trauma Center. PSP arrived on scene to investigate the accident and to summon a tow truck. Tyrone PD also arrived on scene to assist PSP. The vehicle had crossed the overpass at the Tyrone exit and hit some black ice causing the driver to lose control. The car then struck barriers on both sides of the bridge coming to rest against the barrier, facing south in the northbound lane. Following investigation, PSP released the vehicle to the towing company for removal and having the vehicle removed from the roadway, command placed the box in service and returned all equipment at 01:51 hrs.

13:40 Hrs. -- As the snow, sleet, and freezing rain began to fall in Northern Blair county, Stations 33, 34, 36, 21 and Medic Unit 402 were alerted to a structure fire in Box Area 36-1 on Templeton Lane (Vail area of Snyder Twp.). Engine 3317 with Lt. 3309 (C.Dillon) riding the officers spot responded with a crew of 6. Engine 33 arrived onscene the same time as Engine 3612, which responded from the scene of an MVA they were on, finding smoke showing from a 1 story modular home. The crew of Engine 3612 forced entry through a sliding glass door at the rear of the residence advancing a 1 3/4" line into the structure. Engine 33's crew went to the front of the structure, being directed by the home owner to where the seat of the fire was. The fire was located in the crawl space under the structure. A second line was advanced to the seat of the fire. Engine 3413 responding with Chief 3401 (T.Weston) on board, arrived on scene. Engine 34's crew worked with the crew of Engine 33. Rescue 3338 arrived on scene with Chief 3301 (B.Lynn) and a crew of 8. Rescue 33's crew staged to back up the engine crews of 33 and 34. Truck 3351 with Asst.Chief 3303 on board and a crew of 4 arrived on scene and staged at a hydrant along Old Rt. 220 at the end of Templeton Lane. Command was established by Deputy Chief 3602 who responded direct. Crews on scene found that the fire was electrical in nature, igniting insulation and wood in the crawl space under the residence. During the overhaul stage, a thermal imaging camera was used to look for hotspots. Tanker 2121 was cancelled enroute after fire was placed under control by command. Command released crews from Stations 33 and 34 returning them to the boro at 15:05 Hrs.

15:45 Hrs. - As crews were just back in station from an earlier structure fire cleaning up, Stations 33, 34, 36 and Medic Unit 402 were dispatched for a single vehicle MVA with entrapment in Box area 31-3 (Birmingham area along Route 453, just south of Tyrone). Rescue 3338 with Asst.Chief 3303 (J. Watson) and a crew of 8, responded immediately behind the medic unit. Rescue 33 arrived on scene along with the Medic Unit finding 1 full size pick-up truck over the guardrail and down the embankment coming to rest partially in the river on its roof. Asst. Chief 33 established command. Crews immediately began stabilization duties as the crew of the Medic Unit assessed the male occupant still in the vehicle. Engine 3413 with Chief 3401 (T.Weston) on board arrived on scene assuming command. The crew of Engine 34 pulled a 1/34" protection line down to the vehicle. Engine 3612 arrived on scene with its crew assisting the crew of Rescue 33. Rescue 33's crew pulled the front bumper preconnected hydraulic tool and switched it over to the spreader to remove the driver's side door to access the patient. Upon removing the door the patient was lowered onto a backboard and removed from the vehicle. The patient was then placed in a stokes basket for removal to the top of the embankment and placed in the Medic Unit for transport. A crew member from Rescue 33 was requested to drive the Medic Unit to Altoona Regional Trauma Center for hypothermia and compartmental injuries. Upon completion of extrication, crews from Rescue 33 and Engine 34 controlled hazards, deploying surface booms to contain the fluid spill into the river. Due to the close proximity of the Blair/Huntingdon county line, several departments were dispatched on the incident. Huntingdon Co. Stations 22 (Warriors Mark) and 1 (Alexandria) responded on the call along with the Tyrone units. Command placed the Huntingdon Co. units available. Rescue 33 was also released by command, leaving Engine 34 on scene until removal of the vehicle was complete. Huntingdon County PSP units also responded to investigate.

16:03 Hrs. - While crews were working a pin job on Rt. 453, Stations 33, 34, 36 and 21 were dispatched for a rekindle of the earlier structure fire on Templeton Lane (Vail area of Snyder Twp.). Engine 3317 with a crew already in station, responded immediately with Chief 3301 (B.Lynn) on board and a crew of 6. Engine 33 arived on scene with Chief 33 assuming command. Engine 33's crew made contact with the homeowner who stated there was still some smoldering material under the structure. Engine 3414 responded and arrived on scene backing up Engine 33's crew. Crews removed the smoldering material from under the residence using the can off of Engine 33 to wet down the area. Tanker 2121 arrived on scene and was held on the hard road along Old Rt. 220 and Templeton Lane. Crews used a thermal imaging camera to check for additional extension. With the area showing no hot spots and being wet down some more, command placed the incident under control. Command placed the 36 box available at 16:40 hrs returning all equipment. Engine 2111 stood by in 33's quarters until units were freed up from both the MVA and structure fire.
