3/17/07 Final Call for Chief 31-01

Chief 3101 James Beckwith made his final call with the Tyrone Fire Department. He started his career in the fire dept. in 1961 when he joined the Citizens Fire Co. #2 (now dissolved). Jim raised through the ranks quickly when he was elected as Chief of the Citizens in 1969. Jim was a vital part in getting a rescue squad started in Tyrone which was based out of the Citizens station. Jim and his firefighters became trained in specialized rescue for the northern end of Blair County. Those were the days when rescue squads were few and far between. Jim held the position of Chief of the Citizens until 1975 when he was appointed to the position of Department Chief of the then 3 stations that made up the Tyrone Fire Department.

Chief Beckwith with his son, Hookies Firefighter, Mike Beckwith

Chief Beckwith held the position of Boro Chief for 28 years until his retirement from the Chief position in 2003. Since then the boro chief position has been eliminated in his honor. Jim took over the position of Boro Fire Marshal so he could stay involved in the fire service. Jim also became a member of the Blazing Arrow Hook and Ladder Fire Co. (Hookies 33) where he remained a member up until his passing this past week. Jim was a very civic minded person, as he served on the Tyrone Boro Council for over 20 years. His commitment did not stop there as he also served as the Boro's Emergency Management Agency Coordinator. Jim had a tiredless dedication to serve the citizens of Tyrone.  Jim made his final call aboard Engine 33 as the bells, tones and siren rang out in his honor. Jim will be greatly missed by all of those who knew and loved him. Rest in God's Peace Chief Beckwith (3101).
