A few of the members of Station 33 kicked off the defending Super Bowl Champs new season by building their own big screen TV in the apparatus bay. Thanks to the help of FF/EMT S.Thompson from Station 60, the Steeler fans of Station 33 got to watch the first game of the year in style. With the final score being Steelers 28, Dolphins 17, it made for a very enjoyable evening at Station 33. Thanks Scotty!!


8 members of Station 33 traveled to Philipsburg to help the Reliance Fire Co. celebrate 125 years of service. 5 members of Station 33 provided manpower for Quint 12 so that the Reliance firefighters could be freed up for their celebration. The days activities included a pumping contest and a smoke house competition in the morning. From 1:00p-4:00p there was a fire apparatus show in which Station 33 participated in, bringing Truck 33 and Brush 33 with 3 members. To cap off the day, a dance was held at Reliance's bingo hall.
Awards for the apparatus show were given out at 6:00p. Station 33 brought back a total of 3 awards which included Best Apearing & Equipped Ladder Truck/Quint; 2nd place Best Appearing & Equipped Brush Truck; and Best Appearing & Equipped Apparatus"Other than Red" Award. Many new friends were made and the day was enjoyed by all. Congratulations Reliance Fire Co on 125 years and best of luck for many, many more years of service!! 12:00 Hrs. -- Stations 33, 34, 36 and Medic Unit 401 were dispatched for a single vehicle MVA with roll-over and reported entrapment in the area of Tri-Star Ford in the Grazierville area of Snyder Twp. Initial reports from the Blair County 911 indicated that a female occupant had her arm trapped under the vehicle. First arriving units on scene found a vehicle that had been on its side, but was rolled back-over by bystanders on scene before emergency crews arrived. Rescue 33 along with Engine 34 responded. Rescue 33 assisted the medic unit with packaging patient as Engine 34's crew secured the vehicle. One female occupant was transported by ground to Altoona Regional Trauma Center with an obvious arm injury. Station 36 stood by in quarters per Chief 3601. Chief 3301 (B. Lynn) had the command.
22:04 Hrs. -- Stations 36, 33, 34, 21 and Medic Unit 401 were dispatched for a possible structure fire along Meade Street in the Northwood area of Snyder Twp. Deputy Chief 3602 arrived on scene along with another officer from Station 36 and found a light smoke condition with no fire showing in a one story single family dwelling. Truck 33 and Engine 34 arrived simultaneously. The truck and engine crews staged at the front door of the residence until recieving orders from Deputy Chief 36. Engine 33 arrived as second engine in with its crew backing up Engine 34's crew. Engine 36 arrived as 3rd in engine followed in by Rescue 33 and Tanker 21. Command and interior crews determined that the smoke was coming from a malfunctioning baseboard heater. Interior crews used thermal imagining devices to check for extension with no findings. Deputy Chief 3602 had Northwood command and placed all units available at 22:30 hrs
06:00 Hrs. -- An unusually busy day greeted the volunteers at Station 33. The morning started off with a possible structure fire at the American Eagle Papers at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave in the boro of Tyrone. Blair Co. 911 dispatched Stations 33, 34 & Medic Unit 401 for a structure fire in the boiler house of the paper mill. Truck 33 with Chief 3301 (B. Lynn) responded with a crew of 7 and arrived on scene to find nothing showing from the exterior. Upon making contact with the boiler house operators, it was determined that it was only a sparking wire. Officials on scene confirmed there was no fire and Chief 3301 placed the department available just prior to Engine 33's response. Chief 3301 (B Lynn) had the command.
11:50 Hrs. -- Stations 33, 34 and 36 were dispatched for a high occupancy fire alarm at 801 Clay ave (Tyrone Elementary School) in Snyder Twp. Truck 33 with Chief 3301 (B. Lynn) responded with a crew of 5. While enroute Blair Co. 911 advised this was going to be a false alarm. Chief 33 held the response to Truck 33 holding all other equipment in quarters. Upon arriving on scene, Chief 33 was met by school officials who stated that a student had activated a pull station alarm in the cafeteria. Chief 33 placed all units available at 12:10 hrs. Chief 3301 (B. Lynn) had the command.
12:30 Hrs. -- Stations 33 and 34 were dispatched for a diesel spill at the Agway along the 1500 block of Lincoln Ave. Rescue 33 with Deputy Chief 3302 (J. Wagner) responded with a crew of 4. Upon arriving on scene, crews made contact with tank truck operator who stated that a heating oil storage tank had been overfilled with overflow spilling out the top of the 55 ft. tank and filling the containment pit with several hundred gallons of product. Deputy Chief 33 requested a single engine to stand by with Rescue 33 as the product was pumped out of the containment pit. Blair County EMA 702 was notified of the stable situation. Engine 33 responded on the single engine assignment with a crew of 3. Upon completion of the containment pit clean up by Agway officials, Deputy Chief 33 placed the box in service placing all units available at 13:53 hrs. Tyrone Fire Police also assisted with traffic control along the 1500 block. Deputy Chief 3302 (J. Wagner) had the command.
Upon arriving back in quarters from the spill incident, Station 33 was dispatched for a QRS call with EMS station 400. Engine 33 with a crew of 3 responded with Medic Unit 401 for a "Delta" response fall victim. Engine 33 assisted EMS with packaging and extrication before being released by EMS. FF/EMT B. Mayes served as Engine 33's officer.
Approximately 20 mins after the previous QRS call, Station 36 with Bellwood Medic unit 451 was alerted to another QRS call in the Nealmont area of Snyder Twp for a 22 y/o unresponsive patient. Due to the closer response area of Station 33, Chief 3601 diverted the call to Station 33. Station 33 was added to the incident. Rescue 33 with a crew of 4, responded with Medic Unit 401 who had cleared from the previous EMS call. Medic Unit 451 was placed available by 401. Rescue 33 assisted with treatment and packaging of the patient before being released by EMS. FF/EMT B.Mayes served as Rescue 33's officer.
21:00 Hrs. -- The final incident of the day was the dispatching of Stations 33, 34 and Medic Unit 401 for a possible structure fire along the 600 block of Park Ave in the boro of Tyrone. Truck 33 along with Deputy Chief 3302 (J.Wagner) responded with a crew of 7. Truck 33 arrived on scene with nothing showing from the exterior. Deputy Chief 33 established Park Ave command. Asst. Chief 3303 (J.Watson) was assigned interior operations. Engine 33 with a crew of 6 arrived just after Truck 33 taking up first in engine duties. Engine 33's crew was staged until orders from interior ops. Engine 34 arrived as second in engine staging at a hydrant on 7th st and Park Ave. Rescue 33 also responded with a crew of 6. Interior ops (3303) found only a very light smoke condition with the source being a melted plastic decorative cover on the stove. Truck crew assisted the home owner with natural ventilation from the windows. Deputy Chief 33 placed the box available at 21:10 hrs returning all units. Utility 34 also responded on the call. Deputy Chief 3302 (J.Wagner) had Park Ave command.
In between running 6 calls, some of the members of Station 33 did some cosmetic work to the inside of the apparatus bay at the station. Last winter, steps and an overhang were constructed for access to the storage area above the duty rooms and restrooms. That area will be the future class/training room and Chief's office. There will also be a storage area when completed. The steel for the walls outside the restrooms was placed back on the walls along with closing in the steps & making a closet for cleaning supplies. The work party ended shortly after midnight with several different members lending a helping hand. Also a special thanks to FF Todd Keith (our in-house carpenter) for leading us in the right direction. Great job to all of those who assisted!


A few members of Station 33, took Truck 33 and Engine 33 to the Tyrone Headstart for a demonstration and a Fire Prevention presentation for the children enrolled in the program. A turnout gear demonstration was given to the children by FF Kenny Riley while also showing them the donning and doffing of the new MSA SCBA. A Fire Prevention talk was given by firefighter B. Mayes. The children were then given a tour and demonstration of the equipment on Truck 33 and Engine 33. Hopefully we inspired some "Future Firefighters".
Over the past 2 weekends, several members of Station 33 and members of several other neighboring stations have been attending DOH Basic Vehicle Rescue Technician class. The class is being hosted by Station 33 (Hookies). PA Fire Instructors Bill Cornell and John Hawksworth have been teaching the students of the class proper stabilization techniques and different styles of hand tools for patient removal of vehicular accidents with entrapment. The class is very involved with both classroom lecture and practical field exercises. The students have been through the first 2 modules of the class over the past two weekends. They have one more module to complete to be certified as DOH rescue technicians. The next class (module 3) will be held on Oct. 21 and 22 from 8a-4p.

21:50 Hrs. - Stations 33, 34, and Medic Unit 402 were alerted for a possible structure fire at D'Ottavio's Pizza Palace located at the corner of 13th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in the Boro of Tyrone. Tyrone PD and Medic Unit 402 arrived on scene and reported heavy smoke from the front and rear of the structure. Chief 3301 (B.Lynn) arrived on scene and assumed command. Truck 33 went responding with a crew of 7. Truck 33 took a hydrant to secure a water supply on the way in. An interior crew from the truck stretched a 1 3/4" line in the front door and began searching for the seat of the fire. Engine 33 arrived as first in engine with a crew of 6 and established a secondary water source by taking a hydrant at the corner of 13th St. and Blair Ave. Engine 33's crew advanced a 1 3/4" line in the back door. Engine 34 arrived as second in engine. Engine 34's crew backed up Truck 33's nozzle team by pulling and advancing a second line from the truck. Deputy Chief 3302 (J. Wagner) was assigned interior operations. Truck 33's crew found the seat of the fire in the office of the structure and established a quick knock on the fire. Rescue 33 arrived on scene with a crew of 6. Rescue 33's crew was assigned roof ops in case vertical ventilation was needed. Rescue 22 from Bellwood Excelsior No. 1 was requested for RIT assignment. Rescue 22 arrived on scene with a crew of 8. Vertical ventilation was not needed so Rescue 33's crew was reassigned to overhaul duties. Horizontal ventilation was established. There was a great deal of heat and smoke damage to the shop. Prior to salvage and overhaul operations, Boro Fire Marshal (J. Watson) started a preliminary investigation. With the OK from the fire marshal, salvage and overhaul duties were completed. Rescue 22 was released to return. Crews began picking up at 00:00 hrs and going back in service. The State Police Fire Marshal was requested by Tyrone Boro Fire Marshal. Chief 33 placed the box available at 00:30 hrs with the exception of Truck 33 which remained on scene to assist the PSP Fire Marshal. Chief 33(B.Lynn) had the command. Helping to spread the word on fire safety and in celebration of National Fire Safety/Prevention Week (October 9-13th), several members of Station 33 gave some of the local Cub Scouts a tour and fire prevention talk. Chief Bob Lynn discussed fire safety, while firefighters Todd Keith and Andy Meredith demonstrated the gear and air packs. Firefighter Chip Dillon and Todd Keith demonstrated the ladder truck.


Stations 36, 33, 34 and Medic Unit 402 were dispatched for a one vehicle MVA with a confirmed rollover and confinement with an unresponsive patient. Medic Unit 402 arrived on scene and confirmed one female was confined in the vehicle. Medic Unit also advised that patient was conscious. Rescue 33 along with Deputy Chief 33 responded with a crew of 5. Engine 34 along with Utility 34 and Chief 34 (T. Weston) responded with a crew 7. Upon arriving on scene patient was extricated by crew of medic unit 402 and off duty medic/Station 33 member Rick Weston. Patient was packaged and transported to Altoona Regional Trauma Center. Captain 3307 (M. Beckwith) was requested by EMS crew to assist with transport to the trauma center. Deputy Chief 3602 was first arriving chief on scene and turned command over to Chief 34 (T. Weston). Rescue 33 remained on scene until Station 33 was dispatched for a QRS medical call in the Logan Ridge trailer court area of the boro. Rescue 33 was released by Chief 34 to take the QRS call. Rescue 33 responded with the remaining 4 crew members. Rescue 33 arrived on scene to provided BLS care until Medic Unit 452 from Bellwood arrived. Rescue 33's OIC was Deputy Chief 33 (J. Wagner).

16:50 Hrs. -- Stations 33, 34 and Medic Unit 402 were dispatched for a structure fire in the alley along the 700 block of Washington Ave. in the boro of Tyrone. Blair County 911 then advised of a vehicle fire involving the garage. First arriving units on scene confirmed a working fire through the roof of the garage with one vehicle also involved. Fire was also threatening a structure. Engine 33 responding with a crew of 5, arrived on scene and pulled 2 - 1 3/4" lines for an exterior attack. With the assistance of Chief 2201 (D.McCloskey) and Asst Chief 2202 (J.McCloskey) who were working in the area of the incident before the dispatch, Engine 33's water source was established off a hydrant along 8th Street. Engine 34 arrived on scene as second in engine. Next in apparatus was Truck 33 with a crew of 5. The truck crew assisted the engine crews with extinguishment and checking exposures on sides B and D. Deputy Chief 3302(J.Wagner) arrived on scene and assumed Washington Ave. command. Utility 34 arrived on scene with its crew assisting with exposures. Deputy Chief 3402 (A.Walls) was assigned operations upon his arrival. Crews knocked down the fire with the 2 attack lines until the overhaul phase, when the Foam ProPak off of Engine 34 was placed into service to extinguish the remaining hot spots of the garage and vehicle inside. Crews remained on the scene until 18:05 hrs when Washington Ave. command (J.Wagner) placed the box available with all units returning to service. Boro Fire Marshal (J.Watson) arrived on scene ruling the fire accidental in nature with the ignition point being the vehicle which was under repair by the home owner.

20:00 Hrs. -- Engine 33 with a crew of 6 arrived at Huntingdon Co.'s Station 1 (Alexandria) to cover calls until 00:00 hrs. A member of Alexandria's crew was married on Saturday and Station 33 volunteered to provide coverage so the members of Station 1 could enjoy the newlyweds special day. While standing by at Station 1, Engine 33 covered 5 calls. Engine 33 ran 4 calls due to trees across the roadway from an unusally windy night in Central PA. Engine 33 also ran a QRS medical assist with Juniata Valley Ambulance Sta. 100. Command Unit 1 also responded on the calls with Engine 33. As the festivities wound down for the evening, Engine 33 was released from the cover assignment at 00:00 hrs and went back in service in the boro at 00:30 hrs. Special thanks to Station 1 for inviting "33" down to stand-by. OIC for Engine 33 for the evening was Captain 3306 (D.Hoffman).

22:45 Hrs. -- Stations 33, 34, 36, 21 and Medic Unit 401 were dispatched by Blair County 911 for a possible structure fire at the Nationwide Insurance Agency building in the Grazierville area of Snyder Twp. Truck 33, along with Deputy Chief 3302, went responding with a crew of 7. Deputy Chief 3402 (A.Walls) arrived on scene intiating command and reporting light smoke coming from the eaves of the structure. Truck 33 arrived on scene and took the address side of the building. Truck 33's crew split into 2 crews with one crew taking engine company ops, stretching an 1 3/4" line to the front door and the second crew taking truck company ops. Engine 34, along with Chief 3401 (T.Weston), arrived as first in engine dropping a line to Truck 33 and laying 4" LDH to a hydrant located in the alley next to the structure. Chief 34 took command. Engine 33 arrived as second in engine and staged behind Truck 33. The second crew off of Truck 33 forced entry through a door at the rear of the structure. Engine 34's crew backed up Truck 33's #2 crew with an 1 3/4" line. Upon making entry, a light smoke conditon was encountered with no visible fire. Deputy Chief 33 took interior ops. Rescue 33 along with Asst. Chief 33 (J.Watson) arrived on scene with the crew staging at Truck 33. Also placed into staging was Tanker 21 and Tanker 36. Interior crews searched the interior and cockloft area for the source of the smoke utilizing a thermal imaging camera off of Truck 33. First in crews stated that the smoke smelled like burning rubber. Upon further investigation and negative findings inside the structure, it was determined that the smoke inside the building had came from someone "powerbraking" a vehicle in the parking lot of the "A" side of the structure. Upon completion of ventilating the building, Command (T.Weston) placed the box in service returning all equipment.
